Master Data Management (MDM)

What defines MDM?

Master Data Management defines the central management of master-data or reference-data in order to ensure overall system- and application-consistency. MDM is the disentanglement of master-data from the various operative transaction-oriented systems (inventory/merchandise control, order management, CRM, etc.) into a centralized data-store.

For example, is a client stored in the data-store only ONCE and a connector ties the data to every operative system, then any of the modifications become instantly available within all other systems. MDM is also a uniform standardized definition-term for business-related business objects. For example, if the term “REVENUES” is defined just once within the business, then this term has the same meaning throughout all systems.

The difference between MDM and DWH (Datawarehouse) is as such that in MDM we speak of a centralized data-storage for operative systems, and in DWH we speak of centralized data-storage for analytical systems (reporting, data-analysis, etc.).

Studies have found that:

  • Many companies that lack a structured master-data management perceive the overall business-success in jeopardy.

  • While many companies are in the process of initiating MDM, half of them are also aware that they’re barely prepared or not prepared at all.

MDM pertains to many different areas such as data-integration, data-quality, data-consolidation, client- and product-synchronizing, meta-data management, and more. If MDM is perceived as a philosophy which is realized through IT solutions, then such an implementation becomes an ongoing task.

What’s the advantage of MDM?

  • Centralized management of the master-data in ONE place, where also all of the modifications to the data occurs.
  • Business-wide uniform data.
  • System- and business-wide data-consistency also within the business-network.
  • Overall improvement of the collaboration between business-partners.
  • Optimization of business-processes.
  • High data-quality.
  • Clearing up of inconsistent or out-of-date master-data.
  • Reducing overall costs for data-management, data-distribution, and correction of erroneous data.
  • Improvement of competitiveness.

What can Aschauer EDV contribute to MDM?

We already deal with the following topics for some time now:

  • System Integration
  • SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)
  • DWH and Business Intelligence
  • Data Quality, Data Integration, and Data Consolidation
  • Process Optimization

Throughout our dealings with these various topics, we repeatedly noticed that the implementation of a professional MDM is an indispensable goal for our clients – Now and in the future! With this master-data management philosophy in mind, we’ve achieved substantial success in the execution of projects with our clients.

You can only profit from our extensive experience in future mutual projects.
